“When the polls are around …”: pilot on hate speech to “Dharam Sansad”

During an interaction with IANS, Sachin Pilot, former chief deputy minister of Rajasthan, said such remarks were made to create a division in the company.

New Delhi: Congress leader Sachin Pilot criticized the rhetoric around the “threat to Hinduism” and the controversial remarks made on Mahatma Gandhi at Dharam Sansad – a religious conclave which recently took place in Haridwar, Uttar Pradesh.

During the conclave, some Hindu seers expressed their concern at the “threat” hanging over Hinduism. Reacting to this, Pilot said:

“The country’s parliament barely functions … but in the name of religion such statements are made to Dharma Sansad. Mahatma Gandhi is insulted and his assassin Nathuram Godse is congratulated.”

In an interaction with IANS, the former chief vice-minister of Rajasthan said such remarks are made to create a division in the company.

“Such statements must be condemned … and action must also be taken. You cannot call yourself a religious guru if you insult the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi,” Pilot said.

When asked if such statements were made with the upcoming parliamentary elections in mind in five states, including Uttar Pradesh, the congressman said:

“Whenever an election draws near, such statements can be heard. And this happens because they are unable to garner votes on the development board.”

“You can say anything to make the headlines, provoke people, and distract from the core issues. However, people now understand everything. They won’t let the divisive elements into the game and would vote on the issues that matter, ”he said.

Of the meeting between the Election Commission (EC) and the Ministry of Health amid growing concerns over the new Omicron variant of Covid-19, Pilot said:

“The decision to postpone the polls rests with the EC. The electoral panel should appear as an independent body.”

“We all saw what happened during the second wave of Covid-19. It cannot be ignored. EC’s decision would be followed. The health and safety of people is also important.”

The congressman also said the Bharatiya Janata party was losing ground in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

He further appeared critical of the “restrictions” on congressional gatherings. “… but Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath are getting permission to hold rallies anywhere, and thousands are attending,” Pilot said.

He asserted that Congress is in a position to offer “a better option” to people.

“We are working very hard,” he said.

“Under the leadership of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (party secretary general and head of the UP), we are on the verge of achieving astonishing results,” he added.
