The Gendarmerie is also investigating a possible hate crime based on reports that the assault victim was targeted because of her sexual orientation. The incident happened in a house on Old Slope Road.

The victim was hit in the head and knocked to the ground where he was struck repeatedly. The assault was stopped after the victim’s friends intervened. The victim reported the incident to the police after being treated in hospital.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in provincial court on May 24.

“Violence of any kind is unacceptable, especially when it involves individuals who may have been targeted because of their sexual preference,” said Const. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
