Luken wins Emmy Award for “Hate is not welcome here”


Lincoln, IL – Lincoln College student Zaknafein Luken of Lincoln is making a name for himself in the movies. Luken, a junior in the Radio, TV and New Media program, received the prestigious Emmy Award, announced on June 22 as part of the 45th Annual Mid-America Emmy Awards, sponsored by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) .

Zak Luken's winning entry graphic earned him an Emmy at the Mid-America Emmy Awards.

NATAS has 19 regional chapters that hold their own award ceremonies, awarding Emmy statues similar to those given at national ceremonies. They also administer their own regional scholarship and award programs for student productions.

Luken’s honors were in the Short Form / Non-Fiction category for his original short, “Hate is Not Welcome Here,” a play that examines racial injustices and social issues. The film is a narrative piece featuring interviews and testimonials from students, faculty and staff at Lincoln College. Radio, television and new media students Jovana Jeremic, Adam Hoffman and Spencer Davis helped as stagehands and directors of the film.

“When I first posted ‘Hate is not welcome here’ on social media, there was an overwhelming amount of positive comments that told me people were emotionally touched by this movie. “Luken said.” The film is easy to watch but packs a punch, “Luken added.

He then posted his thoughts on the experience on his Facebook page.

“Surreal … that’s the only way I can describe it. I can’t describe to you the emotion I felt when the news broke. Luken also received honorable mentions in the Best Editor category.

Luken currently has submissions for “Hate is Not Welcome Here,” as well as his original documentary, “Our Cause is Right,” in seven international film festival competitions. He has already been informed that he is a semi-finalist of the Top Shorts Film Festival. Further distinctions will be announced in the coming weeks.
