Herbert Naito shares his perspective and solutions to end racism, hate and violence
“Princess Liliokalani does not believe in bullying, racism, gun violence and hate crimes because she is color blind.” This unique book is another work of art by Herbert Naito, a second-generation Japanese-American (Nisei) writer, born and raised in Hawaii – very much geared towards the multicultural international community – often described as the fusion-pot of the nation.
It figuratively describes the concept of bullying, racism, gun violence and hate crimes, which are learned behaviors– mainly from their parents, relatives, peers and other cultures of supremacy. To change bad habits such as eating turnips, rutabagas or Brussels sprouts, we must intervene from an early age. It’s no different to asking your child to remove racism and hate crimes from their way of life. The author provides causes and solutions to these problems.
This unique children’s book (ages 7-18) engages the reader by asking questions directly to get the reader thinking about problems and challenges. The book is a comprehensive guide to four different cultures: Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Hawaii is considered “the melting pot of the nation” as it includes a multicultural state. It is a diverse community where Princess Liliokalani (Lily-o-ka-lani); was born and raised. She is 50% Caucasian, 20% Japanese, 10% Hawaiian, 12% Chinese, 8% Polynesian or of mixed culture (Happa). She doesn’t believe in bullying, racism, gun violence and hate crimes because she grew up with everything in an equal way, without bias or prejudice. It’s because she lives in a wonderful environment where racism and hate crime rates are minimal events in her culture and in her life.
This rare book also discusses the science and research of racism and, more importantly, the cause and solutions to problems of racism such as the causes of bullying and hate crimes. Parents, teachers and the community need to be educated with our children about this issue of racism. By being considerate, humane, and respectful of individuals, we can achieve and learn to embrace peace, harmony, compassion, and love for one another. This book will have a huge impact on network television worldwide.
“Whether the discrimination is based on race, creed, color or land of origin, it is totally contrary to American ideals of democracy.
– President Harry Truman
Having this informative book is a good choice for everyone and worth sharing with young children so that American children are free from prejudice and discrimination.
