Headteachers investigate racially motivated hate speech left in Kickapoo High School toilets

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Kickapoo High School principals are investigating racially motivated hate speech and written symbols in school restrooms.

In a letter to parents, headteachers say they are reviewing videos to identify subjects. They encourage students to present any information in the case. The district says this behavior will not be tolerated.

Read the message to parents below:

Dear Kickapoo employees and families:

A toilet at our school was vandalized this week with racist hate speech and symbols. This incident is currently under police investigation and we are carefully reviewing surveillance video to determine the person(s) involved. Immediately after we were notified, the toilets were closed and the vandalism removed. I am contacting you to make you aware of this deeply troubling situation for several reasons.

First, I want to reiterate that there is zero tolerance for hateful or threatening behavior. This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at Kickapoo High School or the Springfield Public Schools. Our first priority is to create a safe and welcoming learning environment for every student, which undermines this critically important work.

Second, I ask for your help in identifying those responsible. As we continue to review the videos and conduct follow-up interviews, please encourage your child to share any information they may have with a teacher, counselor, administrator, or through the anonymous hotline at 319-2901. The school police dispatcher can also be reached directly at 523-2911.

I am personally and professionally saddened and disappointed. In the coming days, we will discuss this subject with our student population to remind them of our values and our commitments to the safety and well-being of all. We will also ensure that support is provided for students who may struggle as a result of the situation.

In the meantime, please contact me if I can help with your questions or concerns.
