Emma Willis says she was overwhelmed by the response to her son Ace’s photo

Emma Willis says she is still being criticized for an image she shared showing her young son proudly wearing a pink top and letting his long hair down.

The 46-year-old TV host is married to Busted star Matt Willis, 39, and together they are parents to daughters Isabelle, 12, Trixie, six, and 10-year-old son Ace.

In 2020, Emma innocently shared a photo of her son wearing a pink crop top and showing off her long blonde hair with a caption that read, “My little style icon.”

While the star thought nothing of the image and caption, a cruel section of the online community burst into anger over the snap and began trolling the star, criticizing her for allowing her son to challenge gender norms.

Now, in a new interview with Fabulous magazine, Emma says she’s still getting negative comments about the photo – and explains why her heart breaks that society can’t just let children have their say.

She told the magazine: “Unfortunately, [the hate] is always there – both parents and other children.

“I think it’s probably easier [than it would have been 20 years ago]but he is still there.

“It’s shameful. It’s okay, but the stereotypes that have been ingrained in us for years are so hard to change.

“And it’s not, ‘Come on, you should just accept it.’ It’s like, ‘What do you care? It’s just a color. It’s just hair. This kid just expresses himself however he wants.’

“Children should be encouraged to express themselves, play and experiment with colors and clothes. What harm do they do?

Emma previously explained that many of her fans and followers online praised her for Ace’s style choices.

She explained on Good Morning Britain last year: “Do you know what I was actually really upset about because it’s just my son in a pink top and to me that’s kind of normal because ‘ he likes color, he’s always had long hair.

“He’s a very free and open-minded boy who says to himself, ‘Why do I have to dress in green, blue and gray if I like pink, red and purple? Why is it wrong? ‘

“We are raising him as an open-minded and inclusive person.”

Emma added: “There was some negativity but that’s the beauty of the block button.”

Meanwhile, some fans left positive messages on Emma’s original social media post to express their admiration for Ace and his style.

One fan wrote at the time, “Wow her hair is amazing.”

While another posted, “Wow look at her beautiful hair.!! She’s the future style icon for sure.”

A third wrote: “I’m going to show this to my 10 year old boy who loves life and lives his best too! Come on Ace! X”

And another replied: “It’s my senior vibe, ripped jeans, cropped t-shirt, sneakers. Not that I’m jealous”.
