Delhi: AISA protests to UP Bhawan, demands arrest of psychic who made ‘threat of rape’

The leftist-affiliated All India Students Association (AISA) protested outside Uttar Pradesh Bhawan here on Saturday against a psychic, who allegedly delivered a hate speech against a community and made a threat of rape, and demanded his arrest.

More than 50 protesters were arrested by police and then released, officials said.

Bajrang Muni Das, mahant of Maharshi Shri Lakshman Das Udasin Ashram in the city of Khairabad, Uttar Pradesh, reportedly delivered the speech and threatened on April 2 and a video of it surfaced on social media on Thursday.

In the two-minute video, Das is heard saying that if a Hindu girl is teased by a man from a particular community, he himself will rape a woman from that community.

AISA activists shouted slogans demanding Das’ immediate arrest.

They alleged that police arrested them and that several protesters were injured in the melee.

“Women, Muslim and gay protesters have been harassed by the police. Even after 6 p.m., the police refused to release the detained protesters, some of whom were watching the “roza”. Eventually, barely three minutes before the time for breaking the fast, the protesters were released,” AlSA said.

A senior police officer said 52 protesters – 42 men and 10 women – had been arrested and later released.

Uttar Pradesh police on Friday filed a complaint against Das for his hate speech.

Hours after the case was filed, a video surfaced online in which Das apologized and said his statement had been presented in a “wrong manner”.
