Dan Patrick’s disgusting comments are yet another reminder of the hatred at the heart of today’s GOP

AUSTIN, Texas – On Wednesday night on Fox News, Texans saw our despicable Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick revert to his time-worn practice of spitting out racist disinformation and attacking the majority of Texans. Back in augustPatrick was peddling a patently false account blaming black Texans for the wave of COVID-19 clearly caused by the callous policies of Patrick’s own party. This time, Patrick turned to another bogus, racist and deeply dangerous story – the ultra-fringe and militant right-wing conspiracy theory according to which immigration and the demographic growth of minorities constitute an “invasion” which threatens to “seize our country”.

Texans have experienced horror and violence before because of comments like these. Just two years ago, similar racist rhetoric from Governor Abbott fueled the worst national terrorist attack on Latinos in US history, during the horrific El Paso massacre in August 2019. Republicans of Texas to put people’s lives in danger in order to flatter the fringe furthest from their right-wing base.

Texas is a majority minority state, whose success has always been driven by immigration. As such, these comments are yet another reminder that instead of representing the people they were elected for, Republicans in Texas are systematically content to throw the majority of their voters under the bus. This is not how democracy is supposed to work. Texas Democrats continue to fight to restore leadership in Texas that truly reflects the needs, interests and will of the people.

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa made the following statement:

“Patrick’s comments last night are deeply racist, blatantly false and incredibly dangerous – and a far cry from what Texans deserve from their elected officials. The number one job of our elected officials, including our Lieutenant Governor, is to improve the lives of Texans. But as Patrick’s disgusting comments and the vast majority of Republican politicians show, Republicans in Texas have no intention of standing up for the millions of black and brown Texans they are supposed to represent.

“Dan Patrick is so afraid of losing his seat in 2022 that he’s spewing more and more racist conspiracy theories on black and brown communities. After illegally banning abortion, attacking transgender children, cutting voting rights, abandoning Texans during a pandemic, and peddling racist nonsense like this, Patrick is right to think he risks losing his job. Dan Patrick has no idea what it means to fight for the Texans. Do you know who does it? Democrats. And from now until next November, we’ll be working every day to kick Dan Patrick out of office and elect Democrats who put people first. “
