Congress leader hit with sedition for ‘hate speech’ against PM Modi, Yogi and Adityanath

Varanasi: Congress candidate Ajay Rai was charged on Saturday with sedition for his alleged hate speech against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Rai, who is contesting the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh from Pindra, has also been accused of flouting the model code of conduct and COVID-19 guidelines during an ‘unauthorised’ election campaign in the village of Rajetara in Varanasi.
The FIR was registered against him at Phoolpur Police Station on Saturday night following a report from the local Assembly Area Returning Officer.
The former MP was convicted under CIP Section 124A (sedition), in addition to Sections 269 (unlawful or negligent spread of a disease dangerous to life), 153 (gratuitous provocation with intent to riot ), 153A (promoting enmity between groups on grounds of religion, class, etc.) and 188 (disobeying an order duly issued by an official).
“Several complaints were received regarding the episode which was also shared live by Ajay Rai on his Facebook page and made aware of the matter. A four member team was formed and all procedures were followed, after what he was found guilty of,” the deputy collector from Varanasi said. and Pindra’s returning officer Rajeev Rai said PTI.
“Rai was found conducting the campaign without permission, in violation of coronavirus guidelines and in violation of the Model Code of Conduct. During the campaign, he also used objectionable language against the Prime Minister and the Minister. chief,” the returning officer said. .
Pindra, who belongs to Prime Minister Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency in Varanasi, will hold polls on March 7 in the final phase of assembly elections in the state. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
